Introduction

This page is dedicated to the [fr] (french) translation effort of the OpenBSD project website. Its purpose is to give specific information about the ongoing [fr] translation effort and to allow for better collaboration among maintainers and (regular or occasional) contributors.

Who is doing this?

As with all OpenBSD activity, this work is done by volunteers.

The [fr] translation effort is currently coordinated by Antoine Jacoutot and Benoit Lecocq.

Translation status

Our goal is to translate as much HTML pages of interest as possible in all four sections described above and more importantly, to maintain the translated pages in sync with their english counterparts. As of today:

• [base] important pages are translated in [fr]; some files which are permanently changing like the daily changelog are not translated.
• [faq] is almost complete and we are doing our best to maintain the translated files in sync. See What other files need to be translated? if you want to help us.
• [openbgpd] is completely translated and maintained in sync.
• [opencvs] is completely translated and maintained in sync.
• [openntpd] is completely translated and maintained in sync.
• [openssh] is completely translated and maintained in sync.
• [openssh-usage] is completely translated and maintained in sync.
• [papers] contains only one file of interest. This file is translated and is maintained in sync.
• [pf] is completely translated and maintained in sync.
• [porting] is completely translated and maintained in sync.

[fr] translation guidelines

Accentuated letters
Since the french language makes extensive usage of accentuated letters, a translator must make sure that the accents on the letters are put in the right places and in the right styles (é not è in a word such as "problème"). The HTML code must not contain the accentuated letters in HTML codification format (such "é" for "é").

Punctuation
There are also differences in punctuation between english and french. The "!", "?", ":" signs always take a space before and a space after as in "Le français est une sacrée langue ! n'est-ce pas ?".

Line wrapping
Verify that your HTML editor wrap lines correctly at 80 columns. If your editor can't do that, there are other ways to do this such as using the Text::Autoformat Perl module. We won't be accepting uncorrectly wrapped files anymore since it requires non-wanted extra work from the committers.

English words
English words that cannot be easily translated or that should be kept as-is for clarity must be double-quoted.

Spell checking
It is highly recommended to use a spell checker in order to validate your work.

Link checking
It is highly recommended to use a link checker such as the linkchecker program (available in the ports collection) to verify the links in the translated files.

Mistakes and typos in the original versions
As in any translation work, you may notice mistakes and/or typos in the original english version of the file that you are currently translating. Please report them back to one of the maintainers (No diffs please. Send an email with the lines where the problem is and the suggested solution). It really helps the project to keep up with the quality standards it strives to maintain.
